This trip combines
the best of both wor
lds: seeing
the popular Khumbu area around Mt.
Everest without the crowds, and
spending a full week on a remote
trail that rarely sees trekkers.
This is the route used by the famous
British explorer, H.W. Tilman, on
the first ever Everest trek back
in 1950. We begin with a flight
to Tumlingtar, one of the most spectacular
flights in the Himalayas. During
the flight we will be able to see
eight of the 10 tallest peaks in
the world, with close-up views of
Everest, Lhotse
and Makalu. The first week of the trek is rugged, remote, and dramatic. We hike from the hot, subtropical Arun River Valley (2,900') up over the Salpa Pass (10,990') in just a few days.
On our way to Sherpa country we have fantastic views of Makalu, Kangchenjunga, and Everest's rarelyseen east face. After a week of passing through villages that have changed little for centuries, we begin to trek to Everest Base Camp. Enroute we'll spend several days acclimatizing at Namiche Bazaar and Thyangboche Monastery.
The final days' trek to Base Camp are absolutely spectacular. We fly out from Syangboche. On the April departure, we are treated to spectacular rhododendron forests in full bloom.
